I am a firm believer in writing what you know. But, that doesn't mean you have to know it before you write anything. You can always learn as you go. But, the one thing you need to know before you write is simple. What do you like to read? I'm not talking about your favorite series. I mean what about your favorite books make them your favorite books? Do you love the psychological thriller because it makes you question everything you thought you knew? Do you like romance because you lean heavy into the swoon? Do you like fantasy because the world becomes as much a part of the story as the characters do? Or, do you live for realistic or contemporary fiction because you couldn't care less about the pages and pages describing the setting... you just want to get to the relationships.
